When people find out that I am an esthetician they immediately start asking questions. "What do I use to get rid of (insert skin issue here)?" "What is the best (serum, moisturizer, masque, etc.)?" The strange thing is they almost never ask what type of cleanser they should be using. When I ask what they use, they usually shrug it off and reply that they buy store brand cleanser from the drugstore. The reality is that cleansing is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine.
Why do I need to worry about cleanser?
Simply put: your skin will not properly absorb the nutrients, correctives and antioxidants you apply if it is not clean. Would you wax a car without washing it first? No. The same applies to your skin. You can spend hundreds of dollars on amazing serums and moisturizers, but if your skin isn't cleansed properly, you will not be getting the full benefit.
How do I know what type of cleanser I should use?
Tell your esthetician what your biggest skincare concern is. We are educated and experienced in understanding what products are best for you skin. I never recommend that my clients buy cleansers from drugstores, cosmetic counters or from a neighbor, friend or relative that happens to be selling the latest skincare craze. The truth is those are NOT professional products and most of the time the people who sell them are more educated in how to make a sale that how understand your skin.
Is there a right way to clean my face?
I recommend the dry cleanse method to my clients. Apply cleanser directly to your face and neck without adding water. This allows the cleanser to be worked into the skin at full strength. Add water slowly and work into skin thoroughly. Remove cleanser with a damp soft cloth (a cloth diaper or infant washcloth works best). Proper cleansing should take more than 30 seconds and a splash of water. It may take a few more minutes to do it this way, but you will notice a difference!
